| Summary of Position Duties
Southern Nuclear (SNC) is providing oversight of the design of the AP1000 nuclear power plant and have plans to construct two AP1000 units at the Vogtle Electric Generating Plant site near Augusta, Georgia. The AP1000 is being designed and will be constructed by Westinghouse, Shaw and Toshiba (the Consortium). This is a regular full time position in the SNC Nuclear Development, Technical Support organization located in Birmingham, AL. The successful candidate will perform a design oversight role that:
(1) Supports finalization of the AP1000 nuclear power plant design (primarily related to digital I&C, control room, simulators, network and communication infrastructure).
(2) Reviews Consortium documents such as system specification documents, procurement specifications, calculations and other design outputs.
(3) Other specific duties may include:
Serve on the AP1000 Digital I&C and Human Factors Engineering (HFE) Design Review Committee. This is a team from multiple utilities that works to resolve engineering issues associated with AP1000 I&C (primarily digital), site specific I&C (primarily digital), control room design, human factors, and communications.
Serve as an interface between I&C design and design of related systems such as the business LAN, voice and video communications, emergency planning facilities, and security infrastructure.
Ensure SNC and other industry operating experience is factored into the design of the digital I&C systems and the control room.
For operations and maintenance related issues, serve as an interface between SNC Operations and Maintenance personnel and Consortium I&C.
Support resolution of regulatory issues related to control systems (primarily digital I&C), human factors issues, emergency planning issues, and communication issues.
Support software verification and validation processes.
Work with other utilities who are pursuing AP1000 deployment to maintain design standardization.
Provide detailed reviews of AP1000 I&C design changes. Interface with the NuStart AP1000 Licensing Team on design changes that impact the licensing process.
Monitor Consortium conformance to the design finalization schedule.
Support Vogtle 3 and 4 engineering issues.
Ensure that nuclear and personnel safety is incorporated into the AP1000 design and into site specific designs.
Job Experience and Education
A BS in Engineering is required.
A PE License is preferred.
A minimum of 3 years nuclear power plant related engineering experience is preferred.
A minimum of 3 years engineering experience in instrumentation and controls is required.
Experience with the design, analysis, licensing, support or operation of nuclear plant I&C systems and components is preferred.
Experience with digital I&C systems and components is preferred.
Experience with preparing and reviewing calculations, procurement specifications, design change packages and other design documents is preferred.
Field experience at a power plant or nuclear power plant is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of nuclear plant I&C (primarily digital) and control room design is preferred.
Strong verbal and written communications skills are required.
Ability to work in a team environment is required.
Knowledge of power plant systems (primarily nuclear plant systems) is preferred.
Ability to positively represent the company with external organizations.
Effectively present technical positions to all levels of management and to external organizations.
Develop a consensus of opinion among external organizations that is consistent with Southern Nuclear's position on issues.
Ability to work in a high pressure environment is required.
